AOTA’s National School Backpack Awareness Day

Each September, AOTA’s Backpack Awareness Day raises national awareness about the risks associated with heavy and improperly worn backpacks. This important campaign, led by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), highlights how overloaded backpacks can contribute to pain, poor posture, and long-term musculoskeletal problems in students of all ages.

Occupational therapists, educators, and families join forces on this day to educate children and caregivers about how to choose, pack, and wear backpacks safely. The focus is not just on reducing injury—it’s about building healthy habits that support physical well-being throughout the school year.

Why Backpack Safety Matters

Research consistently shows that children who carry backpacks weighing more than 10% of their body weight are more likely to experience back and shoulder pain. Over time, this can lead to poor posture, fatigue, and reduced participation in school activities. AOTA’s Backpack Awareness Day provides an annual reminder to check backpack weight and fit, and to reinforce healthy carrying habits.

Backpack Safety Tips

  • Limit weight: A backpack should weigh no more than 10% of a student’s body weight

  • Use both straps: This evenly distributes weight and reduces strain on one side of the body

  • Choose ergonomic features: Look for padded shoulder straps, multiple compartments, and waist belts

  • Pack smart: Encourage children to clean out unnecessary items regularly
